We feel very privileged to welcome military families into our school community. We focus on the pastoral care for the children during their time at Bishop Winnington-Ingram CE Primary School, so that they can settle in, make friends, feel happy and be ready to learn. Moving home and school can be a traumatic time and we try to ensure that the transition is as smooth as possible for both parents and children.
Members of our staff provide support to our service children and their families. As well as meeting new children and parents, arranging support sessions for them, and developing links with their bases, they run a lunchtime club, where the children take part in a variety of activities relating to their military life. We have books relating to deployed parents and two teddy bears dressed in military clothes. When parents have been posted elsewhere, or are being deployed, children take part in activities to ensure that the transition is as smooth as possible, and their time at BWI is acknowledged and celebrated.
We receive additional funding for pupils with parents in the Armed Forces called the Service Premium. Use of Service Premium varies. In the past the funding has been used to provide additional support; staff training; supporting trips/school meals/uniform; providing resources for the lunchtime club, for example.
The Service Premium is additional funding that the government gives to schools for each eligible pupil and it is for each individual school to determine how it is spent
(Please see also "Pupil Premium" on the "Key Information" tab.)
