Music

We expect every child to develop a love and appreciation of music. Through practical lessons, they will grow as musicians, experiencing music from different cultures, traditions and historical periods. They will learn to value music as a universal language and creative art.

Children will develop the musical skills of listening and appraising, singing, playing, composing and improvising, and performing. They will build musical vocabulary through the interrelated dimensions of music and develop an understanding of the history and cultural context of the music to which they are listening, responding and performing.

Our approach to music is a spiral curriculum, with essential skills and knowledge revisited with increasing complexity, allowing pupils to revise and build on their previous learning. Lessons in EYFS start by moving to music, where children begin developing musicianship skills, including moving to the pulse and repeating a rhythm. This builds through KS1 using a ‘hands on’ practical approach which runs throughout the curriculum. Children will play tuned and untuned instruments, including whole class ensemble teaching in KS2. They will improve vocal ability through a range of songs, beginning with call-and-response and chants in KS1. All children sing daily in Collective Worship. Children will learn to apply notation to their composition and improvisation, beginning with ‘graphic scores’ in KS1. They will have opportunities to celebrate music through performance, including class assemblies and concerts. Our Choir is open to all children in KS2 and enjoys many performance opportunities throughout the year, including in church services and the wider community.

Our desire is for all children to progress to secondary school able to express themselves musically as confident performers, imaginative composers and as evaluative listeners.
